PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A slim, slightly athletically built girl with bright azure eyes and golden-brown hair that falls past her shoulders. She usually dresses in tan shinobi attire that would help one blend in with the landscape surrounding Sunagakure.
MENTALITY: The severing of parental guidance has caused Kiku to become somewhat of a free spirit, and is only rooted to Sunagakure because of her relation to the Kazekage and her duty as a shinobi. In the midst of a mission, she can be viewed as cold, merciless, and above all, cunning. This is ultimately a veil to shroud her true nature, which is dangerously protective and kind. Those that come to meet her note how obviously stubborn she is, and it carries over to reveal her unwavering and relentless journey to keep moving forward and never give up.
BIOGRAPHY: A kunoichi from the renowned Ōura clan of Uzushiogakure, the Hidden Whirlpool Village, defected. Once hailed as one of her village's most promising and lethal shinobi, she had recently fallen down a dark path shortly after her own students, only Genin at the time, were slaughtered at the hands of rogue ninja near Hi no Kuni's borders. She blamed the Leaf for their lack of responsibility, and personally delivered a scroll threatening the Hokage to reign in his village's missing-nin, or else. Konoha had no choice but to retaliate against the woman, and attempted to bring her into custody. The squad sent after her was never seen or heard from again, and the woman seemed to have disappeared into the wind. Her name was Ayame.
One of the elite shinobi in Sunagakure, Inogiri Isshin, was dispatched on a one-man mission to investigate rumors of a vigilante reportedly wielding "paranormal abilities." His investigations and clues led him further and further away from his village, to the very outskirts of his village's influence on the boundary where the River Country and the Wind Country meet. What he found there was something that would change his life forever.
The witnessed the vigilante personally wipe the streets of several minor village completely of criminal activity. Thieves and bandits that were harassing civilians were quickly and efficiently assassinated, and once the key members of the gangs were eliminated, the rest of the vagabonds dispersed in fear of meeting an early death like their leaders. Isshin nearly stopped the vigilante once, but only got close enough to realize that he was in fact a woman. The same woman who had recently fled Uzushiogakure.
After a month of tracking her down from village to village, he eventually returned to the Sand saying his mission was a success, and the vigilante had been eliminated. In tow, he brought back a woman whose family had been accidentally killed by the murderer's cross-fire with a criminal gang. The village was wary of Isshin's companion, but eventually relented and allowed Ayame residence within the major village - under her false identity, of course.
Over two years passed as the two grew closer, becoming intimate and eventually falling in love. Settling down with Isshin brought on a peace in Ayame she hadn't felt since her childhood, and she gave up her life as a shinobi so she could live her life completely devoted to Isshin. In contrast, Isshin was ascending above his fellow shinobi, developing his own jutsu and performing mission after mission with startling results. Before long, he became one of the Sand's elite warriors - a powerhouse that was only sent out to eliminate formidable threats against the village and country.
On the peak of Isshin's career, Ayame informed him of a cheerful turns of events. She was with child. The news pushed them to doing something they had been waiting on for a while. They got married. Isshin took time off to care for his wife, and Ayame prepared herself for the labor ahead. Nine months couldn't move fast enough for the impatient parents, and once it did, they were greeted with a beautiful baby girl. The two named their daughter after the flower that represented perfection and joy - the chrysanthemum.
Kiku was shown to be a rambunctious child. Her father encouraged her tomboyish activity, and often helped her play ninja or properly take down boys in wrestling. Ayame, however, scolded her husband and tried to settle the young girl down with more feminine activities once she realized the possibility of Kiku becoming a kunoichi. No matter how many bouquets she arranged or how many herbs she watered and planted, Kiku could not be tamed. Witnessing her father train urged her to realize her dream. To become a shinobi.
Isshin was excited by the idea. Ayame was not. Their house became laced with hostility and anger as more and more fights broke out because of Kiku's dream to do what her father could. Her mother saw the dangers and pains of being a kunoichi much more important than the good that Kiku could do for the people of the Wind Country. However, Isshin had his mind set, and without his wife's approval he started to train his daughter independently. Young and bright, Kiku grasped even the darker aspects of being a shinobi without blinking. From the age of six to eight, her time was spent mostly on practicing all that her father laid out before her so that she could be prepared when thrust into the Sand's academy.
She showed magnificent chakra control when evaluated by the academy instructors. Of course, they expected nothing less from the daughter of Inogiri Isshin. She hardly spent a year in the Academy when the murmurs of war stirred within the village. To raise numbers within their preparing army, Sunagakure squeezed out the compassion and kindness within the academy to leave nothing but hard, unrelenting training behind. Kiku saw little of her father once the war began between Konoha and Iwa, but it didn't matter since she had no time of her own to stop and rest. Her instructors had orders to prepare her fellow students for the blood and gore of war, so once the training for it began, she slowly turned into a relentless machine.
However, Ayame finally found an alternative for Kiku's ninja training, one that would be much less violent and risky for her only child. She quelled the growing darkness in Kiku's heart by placing her directly into the training and temporary care of Tsuma, one of Sunagakure's most accomplished Iryōnin, alongside another student by the name of Tomoe Botan. Kiku flourished alongside Botan, and was praised by Tsuma as being one of her most talented students, though still considered to be a novice compared to Botan's apparent skill for medicine craft.
The Sand joined the war shortly after it began, not daring to allow Konoha the chance to become the supreme power in the war. Isshin was sent out to lead the first ambush party for the village, and though it proved to be a success, he died at the hands of the infamous Uchiha Suzumi to that the rest of his squad could fall back and prepare for another onslaught by the Leaf's forces.
Back in the village, the grim news of her husband's death sent Ayame into a bitter frenzy that reawakened her hatred for Konoha. Despite her earlier arguments with him over their daughter's upbringing, he was the thread that attached her to the world of the sane. Knowing that her chances of survival were slim, she recorded all her knowledge on Uzushiogakure in several scrolls, and left them behind for Kiku so that her daughter could know where her mother was from. It was also a message - of goodbye. Using her dormant skills in assassination, Ayame slowly carved a path through the ranks of the Leaf's army to reach the Uchiha Clan Leader. Revenge may have been sweet, but the kunoichi would never know. Shortly after killing a notable member of the Hyūga, she went missing.
The loss of both parents hardened Kiku, and she began to skip her medical training often, slowly losing her link for the delicate skills that were required of her and planning to sneak out into the battlefield to take out her buried emotions on Konoha. But as the moment for her deployment into the field grew closer, her brother's sister, Inogiri Tarakami, was placed into the position of Kazekage. Perhaps due to some hidden affection toward her niece, Tarakami personally had Kiku taken from her normal training into a specialized regimen. Using her mother's clan name, Kiku went under an alias so that enemy forces couldn't see the connection Kiku had to the Kazekage, and exploit it by kidnapping or ransom.
Her brutal training made her process the loss as something that was an obstacle, and she buried her grieving emotions deep under a mask of indifference. To make her mother and father proud, she continued to grow stronger so that she could avenge their deaths. Her specialty in chakra control was elevated to new heights as she began to train harder and harder, expanding on her knowledge of the human body to better prepare herself for the battlefield.
While not directly involved in the war, the pressure it exerted on Kiku made her train just as hard as she did in the academy. Her instructors were comprised of masked ANBU that held her safety and health in little regard. She was a weapon, and they were going to hone her to an edge so sharp that Konoha wouldn't even feel it when she was used to cut through their heart. A small mistake was presented with malicious beating, forcing her to perfect herself or risk losing her life. There were two others that joined her in the beginning, but they both were too weak to survive the tasks set before them.
Realizing that she was on the edge of falling into a state of insanity, Kiku requested that her ANBU trainers give her time to reconnect with her medical training. Instead of being trained under Tsuma, she was placed as a grunt in the medical division of Sunagakure's army. Though it was grueling, and she did many elementary tasks, Kiku found that she missed the satisfaction, pleasure, and pride of saving a life.
Kiku finished her training in five grueling years. The little girl that used to play ninja no longer remained. A kunoichi, bred and trained to deceive, manipulate, and kill her prey without them even realizing she was the enemy. As the moment of her deployment into Konaha forces neared, the war suddenly thinned in violence. The Raikage vanished, and the growing power of the Cloud collapsed so heavily they could not make a return to the war without sustaining complete defeat. Uncertainty laced the very air that the shinobi breathed, and as each village receded in the war efforts, it was soon decided that the Second Shinobi War had ended.
The Kazekage, however, was not going to allow the Leaf to take them off guard, or to let her new weapon go to waste. The destruction of Uzushiogakure in the midst of the war would prove to be beneficial, as Kiku was deployed as a survivor of Kirigakure's attack on the lesser village. Just as Tarakami had anticipated, Kiku was absorbed into Konoha's weakened population, along with the other Whirlpool refugees. With orders branded into her brain and her alias still lingering on her tongue, Kiku had become a spy.
