| I HAVE SPENT YEARS IN THE DARKEST REGIONS OF THE EARTH, TRYING TO ESCAPE MY FEAR OF THE PAIN I MIGHT CAUSE.
THE HATRED I HAVE ONCE FELT FOR THE OUTSIDE WORLD, HAS MORPHED TO SELF-HATRED.
NOW THE TIME HAS COME TO ESCAPE MY OWN SELF-DESTRUCTION, AND TO SHOW MY FACE ONCE MORE.
PATIENCE... THEN, PAYBACK.
WHO AM I? I AM TOSHIHIDE.
A pair of small feet barely disturbed the grass. Gentle footsteps in woven straw sandals. The stride was slow, as if the wind were strong enough to impede her advance. The timid advance showed an unsteady step, a distinctive hesitation. She was a small girl. Not just petite, but almost sickly thin and pale. One would imagine she were the runt of the litter. Her hair was long, a pale golden blonde. One solid yellow eye peered forth over the rolling hills of green. Behind her, the lush forest of the Land of Grass, its border only mere steps away. She was dressed similar to a shrine maiden. In fact, even if one were to look close at her, they would still probably mistake her as such. Her attire was not so dissimilar that anyone should think otherwise of her. The patch over her left eye seemed out of place for a girl such as her, however. The sixteen year old girl gazed over the hills, peering about. They were bare, but to her, they were stained with blood and littered with an array of corpses. She remembered that one day, this had been the sight of a battle, which she had been a part of. Her attention was drawn to her rear, and she peered over her shoulder at the treeline she left in her wake. Subtle sounds of distinct individuals emanated from the foliage. She could not yet see them, but she figured that the exams must have recently closed, and on they way home were a number of ninja from Hidden Leaf, mostly Genin. The girl paused, but then turned back around and continued forward. They would inevitably catch up with her, but she really had no purpose here with them. She was here to visit someone specific, a new client. She had withdrawn from the exams for this purpose, though it now seemed that she would have had the time to participate if she had wanted to. Toshihide Maka raised her head and continued on. |

Branches cracked beneath his steps as Arata moved toward the end of the tree line. Even though he was supposed to wait up for the others Arata did not really care at this moment. They were all together so he did not worry about their safety so much, besides he would rather be alone right now. He had too much going on in his head to deal with anyone else right now, so he strode forward though the tree line. Ahead he saw the familiar rolling hills that revealed they were getting closer to finally being home.
Arata was wearing his white jacket that hung down to his knees leaving it blowing in the wind. As always he wore the symbol of the Uchiha on the front, and back of his jacket. His thumb was holding the strap of his bag that hung from his right shoulder while his other in his jacket pocket. He was fiddling with the gift he had received thinking of his time with his make-shift team. His face would show that he was lost in thought making him almost not notice the girl ahead.
What caught his attention was that she had paused to look back as if she heard something. Though she turned around again to continue on her path, he began to wonder what made her so jumpy. Then again bad things have been known to happen when your in the outskirts of a country. With that he shrugged as he kept walking at the same pace not realizing how quickly he was catching up to her.

| Ahead of the lone Uchiha, the girl suddenly paused. She drew a hand to her chest as if surprised, and appeared to be unsteady on her feet. Trembling slightly, she lowered her head and stood where she was, as if afraid to move any further before whatever it was that took hold of her had passed.
One might mistake it for a panic attack, but Maka knew better. The accelerated heart rate, shortness of breath, chest pain and tingling sensation all over her body were not telltale signs of a panic attack as one might think. No... she had a history of these and other such symptoms, and she dealt with them almost on a daily basis.
Her pause was not enough.
Feeling heavy now, Maka relented and took a knee to the grass, then shifted into a sitting position with her legs crossed. She was so unsteady that she had to drop her free hand into the grass as she did so, to keep herself from toppling over to one side.
These symptoms were only a few of seemingly dozens that Maka had to contend with in varied number and at random intervals. Some were more serious than others. She had not passed out, nor was she crippled with pain... but she still felt some measure of vulnerability from having succumbed to such symptoms in the presence of another person, someone she did not know.
When she descended to the ground, Maka had taken care of the boy's position relative to her own. While it was certainly a possibility that he might rush over to her out of concern, Maka hoped he would not. Or, at least... she hoped that she might recover before he came near to her.
As the boy came near, Maka drew her eye up.
He was young, around the same age as her, give or take a few years. Though she was sixteen, she could pass for as young as twelve or as old as eighteen if one believed that she was just petite. Given her true nature, he was not less a potential threat in her eye. Appearances could be more than just deceiving. |

As he came closer he noticed the girl suddenly jump as if surprised by something, she was grabbing her chest as if in pain. Arata kept walking at the same pace while never taking his eyes off the girl now standing a few feat from him. Suddenly his hear skipped a beat when she fell to her knees, his feat quickened there pace as he began to fear the worst.
Over time he had been slowly loosening his grip on the bag he carried with him. Still he could not see her face so couldn't see if she was in any pain making him hesitate to rush to her aid. It was when she put her hand to the ground that made him drop his bag, and rush forward to keep her from falling over. For some reason he felt as if he needed to help this girl, even though he was not sure what happened.
Doing a sort of slide forward he caught her before she fell, her skin was soft to the touch as he held her in his arms. From closer inspection she was a pretty girl, maybe around his age... possibly even older then him. Looking into her eyes he barely noticed that she had one eye covered when he brushed the hair from her face so she could see.
"Are you okay?"
He asked the question as he ripped his eyes away to scan the area for any enemies. Over the years he had heard many stories about shinobi that had all sorts of techniques like this, so he wanted to be sure in case it was not a natural cause. Knowing his fellow shinboi would not be far behind he focused ahead of them looking left to right. Not seeing anyone he decided to look back to the girl he now held in his arms, he wondered if she was okay.

| Toshihide Maka was more than two centuries old, and yet a boy like this could still surprise her. She could not immediately decide whether to interpret his actions as chivalry or male chauvinism. Either way, if she hadn't been caught so off guard by it, she would have stopped him from putting his hands on her. She did not want to be a damsel in distress. The initial shock wore off, and Maka quickly realized that she had been weakly clutching the sleeves of his jacket with her fingers. She must have instinctively made a grab for him when she felt herself lose balance. A solid yellow eye found itself wavering between his pair, and she suddenly felt almost weak. His hand drew across her brow, and the few golden locks that obscured her vision were moved aside. She had been startled before, when he caught her, but this articular gesture did not seem to phase her. She let it pass without so much as a flinch. Maka turned her head to one side, as if to shy away from the boy. She kept him in the peripheral of her right eye, however. For a woman as old and wise as her, with so much experience, she was laughably unaccustomed to such an encounter. "I am..." Maka tried to say that she was fine, and that he was in the wrong for coming to her aid. She wanted to push him away and scurry off to see her client. After all, there was science to be done. She was busy, and this was just a diversion, a distraction. She could not finish her sentence. A long pause followed, during which her solid yellow orb followed the boy's face as he turned this way and that, scanning the horizon for danger and holding the girl protectively. When he focused on her again, he would find her staring at his face. She would quickly avert her eye, before their gazes could meet. A slight red hue had spread across her face. It was mostly noticeable over the bridge of her nose and under each eye. If her face was not flushed red as a result of her condition, then this was a blush. It was a little too obvious, and she could feel the heat in her face. It made her very uncomfortable. "I think I will be fine... thank you." Her own words felt so very foreign to her. She was not accustomed to thanking someone, much less in such a vulnerable state. Conversation was not her strong suit. If that woman could see her now... if Subori saw her blush while talking to a strange boy, she would tease her endlessly. |

[/a] ((OOC: Feel free to post back and forth, shikaku doesn't talk much around others so i will just jump in and post in the future when he has something to say. Or is being talked to directly.)) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shikaku hurried with the rest of the newly ascended chunin, a calm demeanor covered his face. He was good at covering up his emotions even though in this particulat instance it was rather hard to hide the look of worry on his face as he thought about his friend Arata. Arata had been the only one that hadn't been promoted, and he may have understood what the panel of judges point was in denying his new rank. It still didn't mean Shikaku was not upset at the circumstances. Arata usually wore his disappointment on his sleeve, at least to his close friends, it was evident he needed sometime away from the group. Shikaku understood him wanting to get away from the group, still he hoped he wouldn't run to far ahead.
He had disappeared ahead of them a few minutes ago and though Shikaku was not exactly worried about Arata knowing his capabilities and skill. Shikaku still would be the one held responsible should something go wrong. Darting onto a large tree branch over looking the rolling hills, his eyes peered outward scanning the area below for their companion.
There he is Shikaku thought to himself is that someone with him? Shikaku allowed his eyes to focus for a moment, Arata's holding a girl, what a charmer. Shikaku laughed quietly looking to the others in his group with a few quick hand signs he ordered them to scan the perimeter around Arata before they went in.
A few minutes passed by then Shikaku received the signal from his comrades, they had established a perimeter and there didn't seem to be any traps or ambushes waiting.
Well time to make an appearance Shikaku said while he motioned for the group to hang back a minute.
He Landed three meters behind Arata facing his back, scanning the situation for a moment he made sure there was no evident injuries on either of them.
Everything OK?

Looking down at the girl in his arms Arata smiled at the site of her face becoming red. She almost seemed as if she wanted to get away from him, yet she stayed as told him she was fine. So for the moment he would hold unto her until she was ready to get up, she may still be sick just too proud to admit it.
"Your welcome. We all can use a hand from time to time"
The girl did not look like a shinobi which made Arata wonder what she was doing out here alone. He figured she must have some important matters to attend to, or maybe she was stronger then what she appeared to be. Especially today Arata did not want to make judgements based off the cover of a book.
"Seems we are traveling the same direction... want to keep me company?"
Base on what he could tell of the girl he did not want to make it seem like he though she needed help. Instead he figured he would just invite her to keep him company on his walk home, that way she does not know he is there in case she falls again. Suddenly his head shot up as he heard movement all around them making him scan the area again. After a moment the movements stopped followed closely by the sound of someone dropping down to the ground.
"Everything is okay. Thought she needed help..."
He looked down at her once more thinking of how red her face got with him catching her. She had a strong spirit so it did not seem like she liked others worrying about her, or seeing he weakened. With that in mind Arata figured it best to give a little white lie to his friend so she could say something if she wanted. It was not his place to say whether everything was okay, she could play it off as nothing was wrong or spill the beans.
"...think I made a mistake"
Giving her a wink to show that he would not say anything about what happened unless she wanted. At least she has the choice to not let everyone see her at her weakest, Arata got displayed to everyone when he failed. Brushing the thought away he waited for her reaction to the situation, hoping she would not be overwhelmed by all the shinobi showing up.

| Maka was unsure of how to act. "I am so sorry if I worried you. My body... it betrays me at times. I suffer from an illness I have had since birth. I will recover from this. You needn't hold me... if you don't want to.
It was sweet of you to come to my rescue." She attempted (quite convincingly) to appear fragile and innocent. Subori was skilled in this sort of thing... manipulating others. Maka just felt awkward doing it. She was not so adept, so she had to lace her words with a grain of truth to provide more believability. She was uncomfortably enough to pretend to be shy, at least. She really had no idea what she was doing. She wanted to reassure the boy, not make him think she was sweet on him. With the other body arriving on the scene, she just wanted to get away all that much more. However, she could not do such a thing. It would merely draw attention if she tried to excuse herself, and make her seem suspicious. Maka shifted slightly, enough to get her legs under her and stand. She drew one of her hands away from the sleeve it clutched, to the other, such that she now clung tentatively to just the one sleeve of Arata's jacket. She could use him to stand. Perhaps she would give an excuse to leave at the nearest town. It was not a far distance to walk in the company of others, even for someone so socially inept as Toshihide Maka. She could manage being with the boys for a bit of a walk, then be on her way to see her client. She had the time to spare, at least. It had been more than sixty years since Maka had any significant interaction with anyone other than her own granddaughter and Shoko Nimori, now Subori as well. Each of these women understood her, and conversation with them was never a chore like this was. She did not want to betray her true personality. Her eye flickered up to Arata's face, but she could not bear to keep it still and had to look away. Her eye came to rest on Shikaku, and she momentarily mused at what he might be thinking, seeing the two of them together like this. The thought only made her blush more prominent. For a genius scientist more than two centuries old, Maka really had no clue what she was doing. |

Listening as she explained that she had a condition made things make more sense. Though it further roused the question of why she would be out in the wilderness by herself. Based on her words it seemed to Arata that she actually could use his help, a smug smirk came to his face as she finished talking. He would not be surprised if this girl started liking him, after all he did just pull the whole chivalrous act. His friends often saw him as a suave kind of guy always making the girls smile, but mostly he just cared about others in the long run. "Don't be sorry"
He wanted to ask why she was here alone with such a condition, but he did not want to seem too nosy. When she shifted in his arms to put her feat beneath her Arata slowly rose with her to allow her to use him as leverage. The whole time he could not seem to take his eyes off her forgetting about his friends probably all watching. In fact he found himself not even thinking about the exams or how he would prepare for the next exams. Holding his arm out as she came to her feat he felt her grasping his arm as if afraid to fall again.
For only a moment they both looked into each others eyes before she turned away. Well she gazed off behind him Arata shook his head slightly as if it would magically clear his head. Either way he came to the conclusion that he would escort her to her destination, where ever it may be. A young girl should not walk alone like this, especially when she had a condition that can leave her open to who ever came by.
"I can escort you for now, you can hold unto me... if you want"
With her hand still resting on his arm Arata stood ready to help her as needed. He would be looking off down the road as he waited for her response, when she felt ready he would continue walking at her side. At this point he didn't really care how long it would take him to get home, if his companions wanted they could move ahead.

| Maka had originally intended on participating in the exams herself, to study the current generation's children. Had she been involved, she may have even stooped to kidnapping one or two of the children who interested her the most. Instead... she had to prepare to come see this client in the Land of Fire. "I think I would like that." Wrapping both arms around Arata's arm, now, Maka began to step forward. She would move at enough of a steady pace, so as to keep up with the others returning from the exams. Though her symptoms had already begun to dissipate, it would seem she would have two young men to see her to the first village beyond the border. She seemed to mind less and less. Just because she was in the care of these boys, did not mean Maka had let her guard down. Though it was not overtly apparent, Maka had lived long enough (and died enough times) to always expect a turn for the worse. Especially in what she considered potentially hostile territory. She was not exactly a friend of the Leaf, just... not an outright enemy. "I heard of the Chūnin Exams taking place in the Land of Grass. Are all of you returning from that? I would have thought something like that would have taken much longer.
Then again... I am no expert on ninja." |

[/a] Shikaku just smirked to himself, that Uchiha such a charmer he thought. Listening to Arata Shikaku understood that he wished to help this young lady, but it might conflict with his mission. This could be frustrating, Shikaku thought as he was unsure of how far she was going. Knowing how stubborn Arata could be when he decided to commit to something. Shikaku thought it better to find a compromise should leading her to her own destination pull them away from their intended path.
None the less Shikaku was also unwilling to allow a seemingly helpless young lady travel by herself, she seemed shaky as she was held up by Arata's grasp. Shikaku as he viewed the interaction between the two kept his distance, though he could still hear most of what they said. Should they decide to whisper he wouldn't be able to hear them.
His thoughts spiraled as he started to circle the pattern of logic that would bring this young lady into her present circumstances. She must be heading somewhere very important if she is willing to travel this path, there is not a town for at least half a days walk in either direction. Her health seems to fail her, why would she be willing to take a chance of getting lost in these hills. If she is so weak how would she defend herself? Her clothes also don't look dirty or old so she must not be poor, but if she is not poor why wouldn't she have someone guiding her or even assisting her?
Shikaku continued his analysis of the situation there was definitely something missing. As he walked he clasped his hands together allowing his mind to focus, his eyes closed. His mind replaying everything that had transpired, everything he had seen or heard during these interactions.
Then she spoke, the new information bringing to light new possibilities. The chunin exams had only just ended and though words spread quickly the stories do not spread that quickly. Also taking into effect her present speed and her lingering health it would make no sense for her to have any sort of detail in regards to the chunin exams. There was definitely something strange about this young lady but now Shikaku may have found a way to find the answers to his lingering questions.
Oh what did you hear about the exams? he said to the young lady, still trailing behind them by a few meters.

The feel of the girl wrapping her arms around his felt pretty good as they started walking forward toward the village. When she brought up the Chunin exams it all came back to him yet he did not feel as bad for his failure. Right now his mind was focused in the moment on trying to figure this girl out, who was she to start with. He just realized they had not exchanged names yet, and were already walking like a couple down the road like they have known each other for a long time.
"Yeah. We are coming back from Kusa, it seems a lot of people that were supposed to show up never arrived"
He placed his hand on hers without even thinking about it, he was too busy lost in his own thoughts at the moment. Looking over at her he gave her a smile watching her hair blowing the wind, he could not help but to want to know more about her. Shikakus question hardly heard as he looked forward once more not wanting to be caught staring at her like some creeper.
"So I am Uchiha, Arata... whats your name?"

The clouds far above, held sway in their moving with the wind. But they held something far more in them then moisture. Looking down between the clouds, her range finder on, and her radio on her neck, was Marā.
"Two genin, and a third unknown, looks like a non-com"
She would say into the radio, transmitting to Konohagakure main intel. With her teammates missing at the moment, she couldn't move forward on the Bijutsukai, so had to do routine village things, like ensuring the safety of their traveling Genin.
"Once they past the Spiked Canyon Border, will make contact to ensure safety to the village"
She said into the radio. The bridge over the spiked canyon was well traveled, considering that canyon surrounded a more than a few miles outside the village itself. It was coming up in the road, and she would begin descending from the clouds, riding a cloud like a surfboard down and out of sight to the other side of the bridge to wait patiently for the boys to get there. Go two more rounds of posting, and traveling, and we'll say thats when you get to the bridge.

| When the boy behind them posed his question, Maka turned her head enough to see him. Arata's comment brought her focus back to him, however, and it was he who she replied to. "Oh... I wanted so very much to see the exams. They are something of a spectacle, I hear. I live in the Land of Grass, and this was my first opportunity to see them in person, but just as the exams started, I was called away on request of the priest in this area.
I am afraid I know very little of the exams." The would tell the bods a version of the truth. "There is a shrine nearby... a shrine to Inari. Few priests and shrine maidens still tend to such shrines. Most worship elsewhere, and Inari shrines often fall into disrepair or are maintained poorly by the local residents, who should know better.
I have been called in to assist the priest who tends to this shrine. It is my understanding that he is in the process of getting all of his affairs in order. I do not think he has long...
I am sorry, this is a bit of of a morbid topic." The boy placed his hand on hers, and though Maka felt no less uncomfortable, she was starting to feel better... at least in terms of her medical state. Her symptoms were starting to fade. Her strength was coming back to her already, though in this body she never really had much strength to begin with. As usual, her episodes were short. "Maka. My name... it is Maka." Nothing she said was technically a lie. Maka had never participated in the exams before. When the tradition started, she was already an accomplished medical ninja and scientist. She really did not know a great deal about them. She wanted to go to the exams, but like she said, she had been called on to visit the local shrine. Though her words inferred that she herself might be a shrine maiden, that was not the case. She said she was here to assist the priest in the area, and that was the truth. The matter was medical, not spiritual... as one might have assumed. |

[/a] After the young lady spoke Shikaku's mind was put at ease, her reasoning's were understandable enough. Though he was still sure that this young lady, or anyone for that matter, during their trip could only be trusted to a point. He was still relaxed enough to not be trying to look for a problem when it may not exist in the first place. People who go looking for trouble are always so lame, but it doesn't mean Shikaku was any less confused by the young ladies present circumstances.
He would continue to follow along silently hoping to not feel like to much of a third wheel, but at least Arata didn't looks so pissed anymore. Such a charmer that guy, talking to ladies has never been a problem for him. Shikaku's mind bubbled into silly thoughts of an over the top example of the interactions between Arata and his fan girls.
Oh Arata, your Sharingan eye's are so beautiful the ladies in his imagination said. Then Arata would stand there in a pose for a moment as all the nearby ladies would swoon from his glance.
The over the top daydream faded from Shikaku's mind as he peered down across the valley, realizing they would soon arrive at the area he was told another escort would rendezvous with his current squad.

"Not sure I have been to this shrine of Inari... I will have to check it out"
He spoke as he looked ahead toward their destination trying not to think of the exams. Instead his thoughts focused on Maka, for some reason she peaked his interest in a way no other girl has. Though it is different then the others as well, sure she is pretty... there is just something off about her. For some reason he felt like he should really get to know her, like she was a mystery that he had to solve. Figure out why a girl so sick would be walking alone, and why a priest would need help from her. She was like a puzzle with many missing pieces that he had to find before he could piece them together to reveal the picture.

| The boys were, for the moment, of little interest to Maka. She was mostly concerned with getting away from them, arriving at her intended destination as quickly as possible. She would not be going to their village with them, but stopping off at the shrine on the way. Hopefully, neither of the boys intended on attempting to escort her off of their intended course. The young Uchiha seemed to be interested in her. An unintended consequence of being in a cute body, no doubt. Perhaps she was being too kind to him, too amiable. She wanted to appear innocent and nonthreatening, she did not want a couple of children blindly following her around like puppies. "I believe there is a bridge a short distance ahead of us. The shrine is not far from there, so once we are over the bridge it would be fine if you left me to continue on your journey home." Maka teased the idea of separating from them. |

Chucking to himself Arata kept walking shoving his free hand into his pocket he smiled at her words. He knew the bridge she was speaking of was close ahead but at least she helped put him in a better mood well they walked together. Looking up at the sky Arata felt the weight of participating in the exams all over his body. Honestly he could not wait to get to the village to rest, besides there was plenty of other girls in Konoha.
"That's cool. Your pretty brave... for a pretty girl like yourself"
Turing to her as he spoke Arata winked at her trying to show that he had confidence in her. His gaze shifter from her to the path ahead letting her continue holding his arm until they reached the bridge, he hoped she was not too into him. After all most girls seemed to take his flirting as if he wanted to be with them, his face cringed a bit when he thought of one girl. She got so mad at him when he turned her down that she kicked him in the balls, as if out of reaction Aratas free hand moved to protect his junk while still in his pocket.

As the group came to be at the other side of the bridge, they would see a woman standing across it. Mara stood in silence, her hands held behind her back, as she stood with her legs spread a bit, just waiting. Her hitai ate on her hip was in clear sight, and she pressed a finger to the radio on her neck.
"Checkpoint 1, this is Overwatch, we have the package in sight... Roger Overwatch, stay on course, ensure package delivery to arch. Roger, Overwatch out."
Came her communication through the radio as the Genin and Chunin form the exams made their way home. Though she did note there was someone odd with them. The woman seemed to be more then she looked, and at first Mara considered her just a traveling civilian, but upon further watch she was beginning to think not... something about her seemed off.
Mara couldn't help it, but there was an odd wrongness to the woman, could be her own paranoia playing tricks on her or could be intuition. Whichever it was, Mara was not going to let her guard down

Upon arriving in front of her Shikaku looked her over for a simple moment she didn't look happy. Or was she thinking? Shikaku wasn't sure so we he waited a moment. Then with a cough he spoke.
cough... Mara-sama. I am Nara shikaku reporting, i have safely escorted the shinobi from the exams.
He said quietly not wanting the civilian to hear.
After that he quietly waited for Mara's response, standing at the side of the trail.
