There are moments in my -hell, I'm going as far as to say in everyone's- life when I've stopped to ask myself "How hard will you work to get what you want?" For the past twelve years, I've been stumped by these self appointed quizzes while I do what I've been naturally accustomed to do after a test: punch something. I couldn't study for it. I couldn't make a cheat sheet. I couldn't copy off of Gregory in the front row through his glasses' reflection. I hated the question for most of my life, mainly because the answer I had for it was one I couldn't bear to own.
My earliest memory was when I was five, and it had something to do with a bunch of adults standing over me. It's incredibly hazy, but someone said my name [presumably] and then BAM: cold damp morning streets. Somehow, I managed to find myself staying with a group of other orphaned children that were surprisingly organized nomads of the village. We would do what usual delinquents did in a street gang; kick dogs, run the butcher out of his kitchen to KO him with a pig thigh, ruffing up anyone who tried to stop us. You know, the usual.
I was six when I had gotten into a fight with our unofficial leader, some bald kid named Gou, and eventually I was out on my ass again. Loneliness got to me pretty fast, despite the tough front I put up. Though I think it was more the fact that the streets began to become icy this time around, and death was beginning to become more of a threat to poor little me. But I persevered, and found that the butcher's meat locker was just a bit too warm to be a proper refrigerator; a new home. Still cold, but I'd rather die of smelling rotting meat than freeze in the street.
It wasn't long after finding my new home that I ran into another kid; surprisingly the first non-"woe is me"-"no body wants to adopt me" street urchin I'd come across in a long time. He was lost in what he called the "bad side" of town. I just nodded, overwhelmed by the idea that there was another side of town . Anyway, I acted as his body guard as he gradually retraced his steps back to his house. Apparently his parents sheltered the boy to the point where he had to leave, and the thought of being gone longer than an hour roused the nightmare of a dead son. They told me I could come by any time I wanted to. Thinking about it now, it must have been pretty awkward to have scruffy old me show up at their door step from nine to nine.
Eventually, the couple decided to adopt me, though there were a few complications. I hadn't been an official member of the village, meaning I had to get residency before I could be a part of the family. When asked, I realized I never had a name other than "boy" or "son". My "parents" were so polite that they never ask permission to call me by my actual name: mind blowing, they seemed at the time. But somehow, I managed to recall that thing someone called me from my toddler years: Kuro. So I became Sankaku Kuro, son of Gurache (Pops) and Douitashi (Mom), and older brother to Issou (4 at the time).
What I didn't know was that the Sankaku name belonged to a clan. I was excited; I was just learning what "shinobi" were, and their kickass style of magic and illusions just drew me in. Shit happens though, as the clan members who adopted me had no plans to become ninja, nor did they for their actual son. My persistent pleas and puppy eyes eventually won them over, and I was admitted into the Academy.
I hated it. I hated everything about it. Chakra? That made no sense. I thought it was all will power and magic powder. Boy howdy did being last in class suck. The teachers began to teach us about the different kinds of jutsu; Nin, Tai, and Gen. Seeing as how chakra still eluded me, I went all out into working on physical training. Were it not for Mom's terrible cooking, I probably would have quit the training, but the horrendous smells kept me in my room with only weights and a push up mat.
At age nine, I met my grandfather. We didn't get along from the start. He tried to surprise the family by sneaking into the house and sleeping in the guest room without them knowing, but ended up with a surprise of his own when he tried to sleep on a cursing, kicking bundle of anger. He said I wasn't a true clan member until I could learn jutsu, to which I ended up responding with a solid punch to his face. I thought he was testing me; it's a reflex! Anyway, I remember something about saying "I'm going to be the head of this clan one day" and he said something like "Shut up...Don't try...Issou should be blah bleeblah."
Despite our mutual hatred, he did teach me more about chakra and how to control it. I get even better at jutsu, and ended up mastering the Bunshin no Jutsu after many intense weeks of training. Though the clone didn't last long, I was inspired to continue my training.
Well, I've recently turned thirteen and got all of my jutsu down. My test scores were still a bit low, but I managed to pass; I'm a freakin' Genin now baby~! That means I have to say goodbye journal. I wanted to wrap up my life in this final log so that when I'm at the top, other can follow my footsteps to success. Everyone needs to find an answer to that one question, and only choose the one they can live with forever.
I'm not done with you forever, though. I'll come back to you when I have some free time and some stories to add. For now, try not to get too dusty next to my pens and textbook.
