As soon as Naoto's fist started to come down, Shinji's Sharingan would activate. From the theatrics Naoto put on this morning, Shinji did not know what to expect. Naoto's rage started surprising Shinji more and more. The aggressiveness and even the tone Naoto gave Shinji was expected, but blind-siding Shinji had to be cut to a minimum. There was only but so many strikes Shinji could take form Naoto in one day.
"YOU'RE PISSING ME OFF!!" "Really?"
As of right now Shinji did not know what to do. That was twice in one day that Naoto was fed up with Shinji. He was complaining about Shinji wanting to be like him and admiring him. Through his rant about why Shinji would end up a failure if he followed him, not once did he stop to think that all he would have to do was become successful, try harder or even become stronger for Shinji to aspire to do the same. For a someone who was well informed, Naoto wasn't that smart when it came to receiving praise.
If someone wants to do everything you do, then get stronger, that way they will do the same. It was a simple concept. If Naoto wanted for Shinji to be an amazing shinobi, all Naoto would have to do is become one and Shinji would follow. If Naoto didn't want to get strong for himself and he actually did care about Shinji, that would be the best way to go about it. But Shinji would not say any of this. He would for the first time be the mature one in this situation and would let Naoto go off on his tantrum.
Then when Naoto was done, Shinji would watch him storm off and leave the restaurant. But Shinji could still not believe it. How could his cousin be so cold to him? What was bothering Naoto so much that he had been treating Shinji so poorly the last couple of days? Or was it just... Shinji. Could it have been that Shinji's admiration had driven Naoto to the point where he was an annoyance rather than someone Naoto enjoyed having around?
Suddenly, Shinji would come to a conclusion. Naoto disliked him. The only bond holding them together and forcing Naoto to waste his time with Shinji was their relation through blood. Shinji thanked the waitress for her service and walked out the door, not even glancing in Naoto's direction. From an image he saw on a map he vaguely remember which direction Tanzaku Gai was and he started walking in that direction. The only words Naoto would hear leave from Shinji's lips to 'bother' Naoto one last time were:
"Let's go..."

After all this time, all these years that passed by, he still didn't understand. He still didn't listen. He had to shout and flex just to get his point across because nothing else ever worked. He hated it. Even now as he leaned with his back up against the wall, his bangs dripping down to cover his steely eyes and his lips clasped together Naoto's stomach churned itself into knots, regret was seeping to the surface. It'd be suppressed with the utmost prejudice. There was little chance he'd even be able to look Shinji in the face. Much less apologize. Shinji should know him better by now. He should know to keep his head down and just listen to what he had to say.
That's all he ever wanted.
But no, he couldn't do that. He couldn't ever do that. He always had to argue, he had to always snap back with some smartass remark or complaint. The day was already ruined for him so he thanked the gods that it was ending before his tired eyes. Did he truly fail to comprehend why he acted the way he did? If Shinji really admired him and respected him, shouldn't that mean he'd also listen to him? When had Naoto ever steered him wrong? Never. He'd helped him with whatever he could, never turned away his visits, tolerated this mission even though he'd much rather have been elsewhere- especially after his outburst, and all he ever asked for in return was some obedience for his peace of mind.
'Dumb fuck. Can't take him anywhere.'
This was why he wanted to stop his career as a Chuunin. He didn't want to be a leader of anyone or anything at any time. Not a platoon, not a clan, not a village- nothing. People like him had no business in charge of life. It was too important for his sloppy hands to protect. He wanted an existence completely absolved of responsibility so when something happened his inner self wouldn't eat him alive with guilt. And if he had to hurt Shinji to protect him from self-ruin than it'd just have to be that way.
No sooner had the thought been processed than the source of his frustration slipped out of the restaurant and whizzed past him.
"Lets go..."
He couldn't speak to him right now without it turning into another rant. Without another word between them the pair would set off through the distant gates of Konoha with the setting sun to their backs.
[ END.]
