Personality: Dan is a stalwart defender of Konohagakure, seeing each villager as a member of his family. Though he is considered an honorable man who values tradition, he is also one of the Leaf's most skilled assassins, which he readily admits is in opposition of his beliefs. Wise beyond his years, Dan serves Konohagakure not just as its Nidaime Hokage, but as an honest man who has never turned away a soul in need.
Background: Ikiryō Dan was born to an unremarkable family of farmers, but he hasn't labored in their fields for a single day. In his youth, he and his sister, Yamanaka, were taken by a roaming clan of shinobi. Though his parents begged and pleaded for the men to leave at least one of their children, they refused, but paid the family a year's wages for their contribution. By all accounts, the shinobi could have simply killed Dan's family, but they abstained.
Though the clan trained harshly and displayed great cruelty to their foes, Dan learned a certain rigid morality from them. They fought for recognition and authority, but they never slew the innocent and insisted that their fighting be done where little property damage could occur. As he matured and learned how to fight alongside his surrogate brothers and sisters (including his biological sister), Dan began to wear his kind heart on his sleeve. He was trained to kill with precision but could not bring himself to deliver the final blow, and though this frustrated the clan to no end, his skill in subduing became renowned.
Dan did not kill his first man until the age of thirteen, when the clan considered him of age and therefor required him to take a life as part of a birthday ceremony. Knowing that he likely would not do it willingly, the clan arranged for Yamanaka to be kidnapped by a shinobi contemporary. When Dan learned of this, he predictably departed the clan's camp to rescue her. However, no one could predict that the abductor would grow restless and slake his blood lust by killing Dan's sister regardless. Dan arrived mere seconds after the act and flew into a rage, savaging the kidnapper and killing him only after he confessed the truth of the deed.
Dan returned to his clan, approached its head, and murdered him in full view of his fellows. Normally, this would grant Dan the right to lead in the deceased head's stead, but Dan took it a step further and began butchering his former shinobi siblings by the score. A few escaped and he did not pursue, instead allowing his grief to overwhelm him and he collapsed into a weeping heap.
Dan wandered for a few years following this event, building his reputation as a solemn mercenary and the most capable killer most had ever seen, though he never seemed eager before or after the mission's completion. When the village system was formed, a representative of the Senju clan found and offered Dan stability and the opportunity to fight for more than just coin. Dan saw this as a fresh beginning, to establish a home, and ply his prodigious skills against targets that he himself approved. This resulted in him having an uncommonly low mission completion rate, but zero failures. When the formal shinobi ranking system was established, he was among those first chosen for Jōnin.
Following the death of Hashirama Senju, the Shodai Hokage, Dan and a handful of others became eligible for candidacy into the position of Konoha's Hokage. Whereas Hashirama gave himself the title, ballots were issued to each of the village's Jōnin and council members and the next Hokage was voted upon. Unanimously, Dan was nominated for the position of Nidaime Hokage.
