Night had fallen on the troop as they arrived at the northern border of the Land of Grass. Here, it met the Land of Earth, apparent in how the thick forest gave way to mountains. Hidden within the foliage was the Kumo Four, masks donned as they rested atop a large branch just a few kilometers from the border.
"Here she comes." Hakumei said from behind his mask as an owl approached them and ultimately landed on his shoulder. "What's the news, Okita?"
"We are two kilometers southeast from a border camp manned by a team of four ANBU. Now, from my observations, they change shifts every eight hours with the last team taking over just an hour ago. If we're lucky, the previous team is long gone."
"Ah. Okay, so I'm thinking we should go in and take care of this team. Three should die, and one should be left alive for me. That being said, we'll have to be quick. We don't want to introduce the risk of them alerting someone of intruders.
"Thoughts before we proceed?" |

"Noi leading the way, with myself and Satori providing support while Seiza circles and flanks them from behind," he paused, glancing to the jinchūriki. "If an opening presents itself, try to apprehend the one who shows signs of fleeing first," he stated bluntly, drawing the ANBU-issued sword from its scabbard without a sound. With the intent to kill those guarding Kusagakure's borders, it was safe to say they would retaliate. The first to engage were the ones to have the advantage, an opportunity Kuwabara would not look to give up so easily. "On your go, Noi."

Rin raised her mask before addressing the team. "Sound like a good plan, Kuwabara." Slipping her mask back down over her face, she gave a nod to each member of her team. Rin took a breath, and then ventured forth from her position. With her team behind her, she advanced toward the small ANBU camp that would be their target. The trees gradually gave way to thick, dark bamboo as they moved on. Giant stalks, brackish in color and tightly packed together. Each stalk was closer to the next. Rin arced her neck, looking skyward. The leaves up high on the bamboo were blocking out the moonlight. Blocking so much light that she shade seemed almost like a moonless night, in this area of forest. "Something isn't right..." She held up a closed fist to signal a stop.

[/ul]

They were not alone in the bamboo forest. "Something isn't right!"
"It isn't right!"
"Not right!" A squeaky, sing-song voice mocked Rin's warning to her team. The voice seamed to originate from several different directions at once. The owner of the voice was hidden away with the signature concealment technique of his village. A lone Grass ANBU between the camp and the four Cloud ANBU. Three more were back at the camp itself, one on the radio about to alert the nearest station house. Sitting at a table, fiddling with a pack of cards, was an ANBU Medic. He was also a potent sensor, who had already alerted his team to the enemy. A good number of teams on the border had a sensor of some kind amongst them. The Noh-Masked ANBU would be busy with the team of four from Hidden Cloud. He was to stall them while his team alerted other ANBU, and keep them in the area until reinforcements came. He would do that with stacking illusions. He silently kept a distance from the team of four, not aware of their plan of attack, but still trained well enough not to allow himself to be flanked so easily. They were all in his field of vision for the moment, but he was not in theirs.

[/ul] NOTE: Techniques used in order by the Noh-Masked ANBU: - 1: Black Bamboo Forest
- 2: Hiding in Grass Technique
- 3: False Grass Step
- 4: Grass Step

Hakumei'd stopped even before Ro gave the signal. Alerted to the extra neural activity by the Aogan, he'd known that there was someone who was canny to their plan before they had the chance to execute it. It appeared this would be a little more difficult than planned. He would make moves to attack their opponent now, but it was most likely the wrong choice, especially given his area of specialization.
"We are under the effects of Genjutsu. Kai immediately." Hakumei commanded after doing so himself. While not a conventional use of his Kekkai Genkai, it was possible to discern illusions with the Aogan. While Genjutsu primarily worked by changing chakra flow, those changes in flow affected the brain, evident in the changes of perceptions. By comparing these changes in processing between him and his two present comrades and their opponent, he could tell something was afoot.
He'd have to wait now as the primary attackers produced an opening so that he could strike. He could only hope that Ro would remain safe. If this person had already impeded their path, there was no doubt in his mind that they had already sent for reinforcements. They had to be quicker than quick now. |

Running the edge of his left index finger along his blade dealt with the genjutsu, the pain inflicted breaking the technique just as they were instructed to do so via kai. "This is a delay tactic," he uttered, focusing on each voice from the directions they came from. An annoying one at that. "Can you locate the position of our host, Satori?" he turned to Seiza, glancing to the henged Samehada. "We only need one alive, so collapsing onto our target while maintaining the advantage in numbers will allow the blade to render their escape impossible due to its 'special qualities'," he said, referring to the Samehada and its ability to absorb vast amounts of chakra in an astonishing amount of time. It would give them the window they needed to both leave the vicinity and acquire the information they sought from the hidden monk temple ruins.

Any illusion that befell Ro, Gyūki was quick to tell her about it. So much so, that using them on her was an ineffective tactic. Regardless, Ro hadn't been with the team when a Genjutsu befell them. She was already in the trees, beyond the Noh-Masked ANBU and heading for his team at their encampment. She gripped Samehada, who still took on the appearance of a tantō.
Finally, when she reached them, she appeared by the one fiddling with the cards and struck at the back of his head with the tantō form of Samehada. Being a sensor meant nothing, as she doubted he was quick enough to match her. Even then, it didn't matter. Just being near Samehada's blade would begin to drain his chakra.

At Hakumei's behest, Rin took a moment to disrupted the flow of chakra in her body, and then followed this up with a surge of her own chakra to disrupt the flow of the Noh-Masked ANBU's chakra and cause the illusion to dissipate. The effect of breaking the illusion was that the bamboo shimmered, and then flaked away to reveal the familiar trees and shrubbery of the real forest they were in. She did not immediately see their opponent. One of their number had already gone ahead to the ANBU camp hidden in the trees. Ro, their powerful jinchūriki. That would put the teams at three-on-one for both sides. Hopefully, this lone ANBU they faced did not tip the scales in the same way Ro did. Hopefully, he was not all that powerful. Just a sacrificial lamb meant to slow them down. However, she did not have much faith in this thought. Peering through the trees, over bushes and past shrubbery, Rin could see nothing. Nothing but the brown and green of the trees and other foliage in the forest. The opponent had hidden himself away. "Shall I flush him out?" Rin posed a question to her team. While her fire-based techniques may allow her to give her team an opening to attack, they may also alert more ANBU and expedite the arrival of enemy reinforcements. She had to make sure none of her team had any better ideas before she did such a thing.
[/tbody]
[/ul]

The lone Noh-Masked ANBU hid himself well. "Flush him out!"
"Flush him down!"
"Down the toilet!" He mocked Rin again, playing mind games with the girl as he again used False Grass Step to make it seem like there were more than one ANBU in the vicinity. Suddenly, semi-clear footsteps could be heard as the ANBU made it seem he was moving off to the north-east of their location... away from them. In reality, he was masking his movement with Grass Step, moving north-west instead. Reinforcements should not be far off.
Being a sensor meant everything. In this particular case, it meant that Ro had been detected shortly before she arrived at the camp. When she entered the small structure wedged into the trees, it was not an ANBU that she impulsively attacked, but his clone. The clone vanished before it was even struck, as the blade came near and simply took in its chakra. The cards in the clone's hands fell to the table, each one clearly wrapped in explosive notes. The other two ANBU, clones as well, also vanished... just as the notes exploded. The three ANBU were outside the camp, a short distance from it... in Land of Earth territory. A rocky face of a small hill. There were little trees to obscure them. They were clearly waiting for their lone opponent to locate them and attack recklessly as she did before. The kunai that rested in Hakumei's shin bothered him, but not enough to slow him down as he charged out of the forest, his teammates behind him. The battle had drawn out--reinforcements had come and for a moment, Hakumei thought that the mission might close with their death. It was fortunate that his teammates were so adept and that even in the short time that they'd been working together, they'd managed to meld their techniques together in such a way that they could escape the battle. With Rin, Ro and Mamoru holding the primary attention, it was possible for him to slip behind and apprehend one of the weaker members of their enemies.
He stopped only when he was sure that none followed, his Aogan telling the tale--and then he dropped the ANBU from his shoulders and took in a deep breath.
"Form a perimeter." he began, kneeling down so he was in front of the incapacitated ANBU, removing his mask from his face as he rested ever so limply on the side of a tree. "This won't take long. With the mental exhaustion this guy's already been put through, he'll be an easy nut to crack. Just make sure no one gets through while I'm in there."
With that, Hakumei knelt down before the groggy man, holding his eyes open while he peered deep into his eyes, awakening him suddenly before pulling him back under into the depths of his subconscious. The memories flashed faster than lightning, starting from when the man was but a child held in his mother's arms--his earliest recollection, one he barely even remembered remembering--and slowing as Hakumei came closer to the time of interest. He focused now, his actual body breaking into a sweat as he slowed the flow of memories until it eventually came to a briefing.
Through this one's eyes, he looked out to a room of ten or so ANBU seated before their Captain, his face covered by a cloth. His voice was deep and raspy, only a scarred chin visible from under the hem of the cloth which hid his face.
"Kirin." he said, pausing a moment as he was sure the name would strike for many of the ANBU who sat before him. Hakumei could feel this one's fear and apprehensions crawling up his spine, his skin growing goosebumps in response to the shock. "With the decimation of the monk's temple and the assassination of two of our previous leaders, we will name Kirin the supreme enemy of the state. If one of you come across him your mission is overridden with killing Kirin being of the utmost importance. These words come from the top.
"That is all. Dismissed."
This one rose slowly after that briefing and walked out of the room with a chilling fear he'd only felt when locked in battle unsure if he'd escape with his life.
Within an instant, the forest was back in view. Hakumei struggled for breath as he looked down onto the exhausted ANBU then back around him to locate the rest of his team.
"We've got what we've came for." he said, removing the kunai from his shin and placed it into the man's hand, wrapping his fingers around it tightly. His green eyes pierced deep once again and he smiled at him. "This'll be done once we leave. When we go, pull this against your throat. It'll all be okay."
"Let's move." he said, taking to the trees once again so they could get as far from Kusa no Kuni as possible. When they'd gone, the exhausted dragged the kunai hard against his throat, giving himself to the bliss of death.
