History Born in a time of increasing irrelevance for Samurai, Yukimura was raised on stories of past glories and ancient wars fought with honor and integrity, something lacking in the world currently. His parents, the previous leaders of the Sanada, were powerful and respected samurai in their own right – though due to the supposed neutrality of Tetsu no Kuni there were few opportunities to express their power.
Yukimura lived for the stories his parents told him; Stories of the last Great Ninja War, where Samurai finally stepped from the frozen land they called home to fight a great war against overwhelming odds, and of stories long past – from before the birth of Shinobi and the slow decline of the Samurai. His clan, the Sanada, had always served in what was now known as Tetsu no Kuni, and their cavalry was a sight to behold – waves of men on horseback, bearing down on their enemies and using the chaos and fear this caused to annihilate the foe.
Having grown up on these glory stories, it was little wonder when Yukimura became a samurai himself. He sought glory on the field, to live up to his clan heritage, but with only the occasional bandit raid and minor skirmish there was little glory to be had. This is when Yukimura came up with a plan.
He gathered ten of the family’s most loyal retainers, and created the Sanada Jūyūshi. These ten heroes would follow Yukimura everywhere, and fight alongside him in any situation. With these ten, Yukimura patrolled the lands of Iron regularly, decimating enemy forces time and again – saving villages from bandits and beasts, and putting an end to any shinobi incursions from Nukenin or small villages that wished to test the limits of their power.
This constant vigilance caused the name of these heroes to rise in glory, and Yukimura as their commander was hailed as Jimminyûshi, or Hero of the People. With each battle won, Yukimura’s name again raised a cry of victory and hope, which reminded him of the stores of old. Unfortunately, his rise to glory also piqued the interest of his superiors – some of whom were concerned this young warrior would drive the land into chaos once more.
Yukimura knew for certain – the glory of the Samurai was reclaimable, he had proven it with his deeds. This knowledge, and the knowledge that the Shinobi of the world had stolen their rightful place, drove him on. His dislike of Shinobi turned to hatred, and that hatred soon turned inward – why could those in charge of this land not see? Their military force was greater than any one shinobi village – surely they could expand, reclaim that glory that was rightfully theirs and stolen by the hated shinobi.
And thus, Yukimura, and his ten heroes, began to plan…
