"Outta the way!!!"
The young ninja called as he careened down the crowded street, traveling at breakneck speeds. Leaping over a street side fruit stand Kyo finally decided that the ground was just too crowded for him. Ignoring the shouts, and obscenities of passersby that were bumped, Kyo jumped atop the nearest rooftop, knowing that travel along the rooftops would be totally unencumbered.
Ohhh man. Gramps is gonna kill me. I'm over an hour late!
The fatigue he had been experiencing had finally caught up with him, and Kyo had slept completely through the afternoon, waking leisurely at the crack of 5:30 pm. His arrangement with Gouken was scheduled for 4, making him one very late shinobi. Luckily, Gouken, the blind war vet, was a pussy-cat. Too peace loving to ever really hold a grudge. He'd probably just give him one of those stern looks, followed by the offer of tea. Still, Kyo couldn't help but berate himself for his own muck up. When Grandpa Gouken extended a training lesson to you, you'd be a fool to refuse, and an utter moron to show up over an hour late.
Nonetheless, Kyo was rounding the final bend, a stones throw away from Gouken's small, unassuming apartment. Across from that apartment, a small park, occupied by a running fountain and lone bench awaited him. Sitting on that bench was none other than Gouken himself. Now in range, he appeared before his uncle in a swirl of dust and leaves, casually grinning as usual. Gouken was not pleased...
Clad in his trademark green flowing robes, sporting his oh-so familiar stern grimace Gouken sat quite comfortably on the park bench.
"Your late Kyo-san." He said calmly.
"Yeah, yeah. Sorry Gouken-sensei, its just... I got caught up with some stuff. Being the strongest ain't easy ya'know?"
That got a response from the old man. The tough exterior melted away, revealing a gentle smile.
"Well I suppose so." He responded still smiling "But nonetheless there is important work to be done."
Standing, the aging ninja grunted, grasping his aching back. Them park benches were a killer on the lumbar. Bending over he procured a massive scroll that had been resting under the bench. Tapping it with his foot it unfurled, rolling a good distance away from where Kyo stood.
"You are familiar with the summoning technique correct?"
Kyo nodded, still distracted by the length of the massive scroll.
"Good. Then its time you signed your name. But be warned, this is an honor, not something to just be handed to anyone. This contract has been in our family for generations, and has only been handed down to its members when they have been recognized as an adult by the clan. With your learning of the Great Fireball Jutsu, you are now officially recognized. Time to reap your reward."
Gouken walked the length of the scroll, stopping at its end where he beckoned Kyo.
Utter joy filled him. He bit back the urge to cry. Men don't cry. Especially the strong ones. No, he would take this milestone in stride and continue on, hopefully to fulfill yet another one. Wiping the dust from his eye, he traveled the unusually long distance of the scroll and stood beside his grandfather.
"Give me your hand son."
He obliged. Gazing down at the scroll, he spied some familiar names. Uchiha Shin, and Uchiha Jin, one name over the other. Even in death the two were inseparable. Times like these, he couldn't help but wonder what the two shinobi were like. Were they good brothers, did they -- OUCH
The cold metal of a kunai pierced his finger.
"What the hell gramps!?"
"You must sign your name in blood in order for the ritual to be complete..."
"Tch. Still. You definitely could have warned me. Whatever."
Kneeling down, he began to write with the bleeding digit, signing his name right beneath his brothers whom signed before him.
