5 o'clock in the afternoon Uchiha Clan District Uchiha Naoto's House
The Cursed Eye V
Prologue After days of asking Naoto to actually try and work hard so that they could advance ranks together, all Naoto would reply to Shinji was to not hassle him and to either go learn Gōkakyū no Jutsu or to go get himself a girlfriend. And though Shinji had plenty of friends, not one of his female friends sparked his interest. Plus, he could get any girl he wanted; he was an Uchiha. And Shinji did not like things that came to him without a challenge.
Therefore, after asking a million times and Naoto rejecting him, Shinji finally came up with an almost impossible deal that Naoto could not pass up.
"If I learn Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu in three days you have to consider becoming a Jonin with me."
Of course, Shinji knew he was stating something completely impossible. Especially for Shinji, someone who had very little understanding of Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu besides what he heard and saw from his elders in the clan. But Naoto took the bait.
"AHAHA! Shinji, If you can learn Gōkakyū in three days, I'll become Hokage!" That was all Shinji had to hear. That moment, Shinji grabbed his hoodie and left Naoto's abode in a flash, almost forgetting to close the door behind him. From the moment he left Naoto's home, he went door to door, to the houses he knew family members in, to ask about Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu. How to perform it, what it's background was, and other stuff pertaining to the clan's key to adulthood.
But everytime Shinji received the same answer. It was all about chakra recomposition. And that people could not really explain it. They exclaimed that he would have to be able to blow out the fire first. Then he would have to manipulate his katon chakra that he was exhaling into the shape of a ball before actually releasing it towards his target. Which all sounded pretty easy to Shinji. Three days to complete the jutsu? Done deal.
8 o'clock in the morning Uchiha Clan District Entrance
~Day 1~ Shinji woke up early today since he would be visiting the library and wanted to get there before anyone could take the book he was looking for. Last night he tried to blow chakra out of his mouth but to no avail. But of course, his persistence to have Naoto by his side when he became a Jonin was unstoppable.
Pulling his blue hoodie over his head so that no one could recognize him and no one would bother him, Shinji neared the doors of the library. After entering Shinji made his way to the section titled "Shinobi", which happened to be between in the furthest corner of the library. Great. That means he would have to pass more people which made the chances of him being stopped by someone he knew completely against him.
But either way, this had to be done. Shinji had to learn Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu in three days no matter what it took. If it meant twenty-four hour devotion, then so be it. Step by step, Shinji grew closer to the section hoping no one would see him. Arriving at the section without being approached, Shinji was surprised that no one had bothered him. Shrugging his shoulders, he ran his fingers through the books looking for one on chakra.
Finally finding what the was looking for, Shinji would grab the book and make his way to the librarian who's line was vacant. He then handed her his book and his library card, without speaking. After she mentioned that the book was due in a week, he smiled. Three days was all he needed. He proceeded to grab the book and then exited the library to see one of his classmates entering the library.
"Shinji?" Without even looking their way, he was gone. There was no time for distractions and his classmate's chit chat would serve as one. So utilizing multiple shushin, Shinji made his way home. After arriving, Shinji opened the book and started studying it. Spending several hours reading the book's entries and taking time to reread it, Shinji grew tired. He was done with reading and it was time to act.
Unfortunately for Shinji though, he lost track of time and it was time for him to eat. Shinji thought about skipping supper but knew how his mother got when he tried to do so. Walking down the hallway, he reached the kitchen and sat down in his usual seat. With the book open in front of him, he continued to reread the book noticing that he basically memorized the book from reading it since morning. He decided to chow down and complete his dinner in a matter of minutes.
"Thanks mom. I'm going outside! I'll be back in later!"
As he stepped onto the moist cold grass Shinji took a couple steps further into his yard in order not to burn the house down. Putting his hands together to make the appropriate seals, Shinji then inhaled deeply and exhaled. But nothing happened. All he did was blow out air. Normal breathing air. He would have settled for even futon at this point. But no. No elemental chakra came from him.
After trying a couple times, Shinji came up with the genius idea that maybe he was doing something wrong. Making hand seals and then inhaling, Shinji took time to muster chakra into his gut and lungs to try and combine it with the air inside. When he could hold his breath no longer, Shinji coughed the air out. He started coughing harder as if he was choking. It felt as if he had swallowed a match, which though not true, showed improvement.
That meant that he was actually heating up the air with his chakra.
"Okay Shinji. Think hot! Think super nova ho-"
Suddenly, Shinji was interrupted by his father. Bowing before him, Shinji asked him if he could utilize Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu. When asked why Shinji just stated that he liked the way it lit up the night sky. With no further questions, his father told him to back up and used the jutsu, aiming at the sky. While Shinji backed up, he made sure his father's back was facing him as he activated his Sharingan.
Yes, it was a cheat. Sort of like a short cut, but he had to use all his tricks if he wanted to win the bet. Watching with his Sharingan, Shinji saw ass his dad inhaled. When his dad inhaled, his chakra surrounded the air and encased it. Then, when his father exhaled, the mixture came out in the form of fire. Afterward, Shinji's dad manipulated the fire with his chakra to take the shape of an orb before releasing it into the sky.
Shinji deactivated his Sharingan and then smiled.
"Cool!"
Knowing his dad would insist it was getting too dark, Shinji followed him when he entered their home. Almost as if he were in a rush to enter his slumber, Shinji went straight to bed. He could not await to try Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu the next day with the information he just gathered.
7 o'clock in the morning Uchiha Clan District Uchiha Shinji's Yard
~Day 2~ Shinji awoke extremely early the next day. He awoke every hour while sleeping, and when he did manage to get sleep, he was dreaming about Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu. Jumping out of bed, Shinji cleaned his room so his mom would not disturb him about it in the middle of his training. he the grabbed his towel and jumped in the shower. Turning the knob to its capacity Shinji leaned on the wall as he let the hot water run on his back.
He then let all the previous information he learned run through his head. Yesterday's events played like a movie through his head. The information he read, his trail at utilizing Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu, all in addition with what his Sharingan showed him when he dad shot the jutsu into the sky. That part was the most helpful. Thanks to his Sharingan, he was able to see the jutsu's mechanics while his dad was doing it.
Finishing washing up, Shinji shook some of the water off and dried the rest off with his towel. He then went to his room and opened the book to the page on chakra control. It had detailed descriptions on shape transformation and nature transformation, both of which he needed for this jutsu. Then, while he got dressed, he started rereading the sections; thoroughly going through the parts he put post its and page markers on.
After throwing on his hoodie to complete his attire, Shinji went outside. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"Its now or never Shinji."
Putting his hands together, Shinji made the appropriate seals for the fire technique. He then in haled deeply and started on his goal. Remembering what he read, he knew first up was nature transformation. As he filled his gut and throat with chakra, he knew he had to change the physical properties of his chakra into the fire element. This would hopefully heat up the air and allow him to release the mixture as fire.
And so, Shinji did as was needed of him. He used his chakra to heat up the air and encase it. He then opened his eyes and release the new substance. Unfortunately for Shinji he did not use the proper amount of chakra. For this, what Shinji wanted to release as fire, was only released as a flare. The small fire was enough to barely light some candles on a birthday cake.
"Atleast its fire. It beats yesterday's hot air."
It seemed as if everytime Shinji found an answer to the problem that held him from advancing, another would appear. Now not only did he have to use nature transformation, but he would also have to use enough chakra to release a suitable amount of fire. That's when it hit him! He could just use the same amount of chakra he saw his dad use the day before through the Sharingan. The idea was amazing, and fool-proof... or so he thought.
Shinji repeated the whole requisite for using the jutsu. But this time, when he exhaled, he barely released a stream of fire that went out about two feet. A confused face then appeared on Shinji's face. He kept asking himself what could have went wrong. he did everything just as he saw his dad do it. He even used the same amount of chakra. That was when the solution was revealed to him, and when Shinji would learn a great piece of advise.
Two days before, people were telling him that he would know for himself how much chakra he would have to use. They also told him that they could not explain it. And until now, Shinji did not know why. But what the other people where trying to tell Shinji is that everyone has different abilities and different strengths. No one is the same. Therefore people are at different skill levels than others.
This meant that what took his father and other Jonin a small amount of chakra to complete, would take Shinji a different amount. And since Shinji was less experienced that his father, it would take him more chakra than what it took his father. That was one of the secrets of the Sharingan. It showed you how much chakra the user used on their jutsu but it didn't show it in proportion to your chakra.
So if Shinji watched people of higher skill ranks use a move with minimal chakra and he wanted to copy it, he would have to use more chakra and vise versa.
"So that means..."
Running the equation through his head Shinji found a range for more or less how much chakra he should use. The only way to narrow it down to perfection from there was trail and error. Knowing so, Shinji brought his hands back together to make the seals that had become so familiar to him. He deeply inhaled a bunch of air, and started utilizing his chakra with it. He used his chakra to heat up the air and then change the chakra's physical properties into fire.
Bringing his hand to his mouth, Shinji then blew the mixture out, into the sky. The air and chakra took the form of a ferocious flame that extended about ten feet. After exhaling the air and chakra mixture, Shinji took a mental note. He had obviously used too much chakra. The flame was out of control and was too wide and big for him to control. What he wanted was a jet of fire. Not a wall, or a blanket, or even a stream.
Deciding to take a break, Shinji went inside for lunch. After eating a couple of sandwiches, Shinji rested to replenish his chakra. Though the jutsu didn't take a lot out of him from just two tried, it wouldn't hurt to be at max potential. While resting, Shinji grabbed the book. He had learned to transform the chakra into an element already. Now it was time to learn about transforming it's shape. Reading past the nature transformation, Shinji came to the part that held the information on shape transformation.
From what he read, Shinji understood that shape transformation dealt with controlling the form, movement, and potency of chakra. This mainly had to do with making the shape of the fire into a ball. Shinji then arose from his bed and made his way back out side. He noticed it was growing dark, but he could not let that stop him. He had to complete the jutsu in three days no matter what. All this persistence was admirable, but admiration would not get Naoto off his lazy ass. Results would.
Therefore, Shinji had to find these results. Even if it killed him. As Shinji stepped back into the middle of his yard, he would make the proper hand signs and breath in. Once again he repeated the familiar process. By now it had become second nature to him. Take a deep breath. Use the chakra to heat up the air and encase it. And release the mixture out as fire. All up til this point, Shinji had the whole process down packed. It was from here on that he had to complete.
This time Shinji decided to use a little less chakra than he had previously. The only problem was that now he was not using enough. What once erupted from his mouth, now came out as a slight stream about only two inches thick. That was were Shinji learned that chakra being perfect was not an understatement. Putting a halt to his exhale, Shinji restarted the process, but this time he used an amount less then the first, but more than the last.
To Shinji's surprise, he released a jet of fire going about twenty feet into the air. Smiling, Shinji stopped.
"Okay. Now it's time for the shape transformation."
Preferring to be safe than sorry, Shinji reviewed the section on shape manipulation.
"You can never be too sure..."
After reviewing the chapter, Shinji made his hand seals again. Putting his hand to his mouth, he blew out the jet of fire and tried to control the chakra in it. The chakra started to take form and just as Shinji thought he was successful, it grew out of control. Taking a couple deep breaths, Shinji could not help but be pissed off. Today was day two which meant he only had one day left. He had to complete the jutsu tomorrow or that was it.
For hours Shinji stood outside repeating the process over and over and over again. Each time giving him a different result. First, it grew wildly. At other times it would curve at the far tip of the flame. Then it would start to take shape but didn't completely become a circle. All these sessions of trail and error were driving Shinji to his limit. It wouldn't be too long before Shinji would start losing energy which would affect his jutsu in general, throwing off the equation.
Deciding to take another break, Shinji went inside and ate dinner. He knew the process and was doing it right. Why wasn't he completing the jutsu though? Infuriated, Shinji went straight to his room to rest. Awakening at ten, he decided to start the jutsu again and continue for at least two more hours. He would have to be in bed by twelve if he was to wake up by five.
After going through the process a couple more times, Shinji started getting a hang of it. There were no more mixed results. All the results he received were the fire starting to take the shape of a ball at minimum. Though it never actually took the shape of a ball, it was on its way and that in itself was progress. And after two hours of the same results, Shinji decided to call it a night. He figured that he would continued in the morning. And hopefully complete it before the day was out.
11 o'clock in the morning Uchiha Clan District Infamous Uchiha Lake
~Day 3~ Shinji was exhausted. The water dripping from his body glistened as it fell from his face and hit the rays of the sun that was finally rising. Shinji had been trying to complete Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu all morning. He awoke at five in the morning and was at the lake, ready to go by six in the morning. And from that moment on, he had started trying to perfect Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu but to no avail.
"Serpent, Ram, Monkey, Boar, Horse, Tiger!"
Making the appropriate seals as they ran though his head, Shinji brought his hand up to his mouth. While doing so, Shinji inhaled as deep as he could. Once he could not suck in air any longer, he exhaled.
"Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu!!!"
With his lips to his fingertips, Shinji blew out all the air he previously held in, in the form of a flame. But unlike the results he wanted, the flame came out in the form of a jet.
"Dammit! Not enough chakra and not enough concentration! I need it in the shape of a ball not a jet. Also, my seals were all sloppy. If I want to be able to perform them faster, they have to be perfect...."
Shinji then put his head down.
"....just like Naoto...."
Why was Shinji such a failure? Naoto had been able to spit fireballs since forever. Yet after multiple times of trying, all Shinji could ever accomplish was a jet of flame, if that at times. He was one year Naoto's junior but was years behind him in skill. What was Shinji doing wrong that Naoto had done? For years he had trained with Naoto and practiced with Naoto, talking about the day when they would be the best Jōnin there were.
But words meant nothing. And promises of power were empty with the lack of skill. Those who could not excel in the shinobi arts, could not achieve the rank or status they so often tended to seek. And right now, Shinji was one of them. If he was having difficulty spitting a ball of fire at the age of twelve, how could he expect to become one of the Leaf's Elite ninja?
Shinji then lifted his head. No. He refused to be weak. He refused to be a genin all his life. He would not stand in Naoto's shadow forever. He would surpass Naoto and with his new found skill level, he would be Naoto's equal. Making the previous seals once again, but this time perfectly, Shinji inhaled deeper than he had ever before. Then combining his chakra with the air in his throat, Shinji felt as if his insides were going to burn.
Immediately, Shinji would put his hand to his mouth and exhale. Out would come a burst of flames that formed a ball. The heat from the ball was so immense that it started to boil the water below it. Seeing the hot bubbles rise from the water, Shinji was happy, but the he was not done. He continued exhaling and sent the ball of flames down the lake, almost as if to cut it in half. And as his fireball passed over the water, they would be followed by bubbles that arose the the water's surface and released steam.
"Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu!!"
Proud that he completed the jutsu, Shinji briefly smiled while breathing heavily. He then took a deep breath and put his hands back together.
"Again!"
Though he was done, and completed the jutsu, Shinji would not leave the lake to brag to Naoto until he could perform his hand seals in under a second and could spit out fireballs without messing up. On the battlefield, there was no time for mistakes and he couldn't be spitting jets of fire if what he needed was a ball of fire. That was a childish mistake, and Shinji was no child. Now that Shinji knew Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu, he would be recognized as a man amongst the Uchiha Clan.
